Appearance
Lasius niger workers are glossy black to dark brown, measuring 3-5 mm, while the queen is robust at 7-9 mm. They are monomorphic with no major caste.

Where it lives
Widespread across Europe, Asia, North Africa, and North America, commonly nesting in soil, under stones, and in garden lawns.

Behaviour
Keeping it
Ideal for test tube setups, acrylic, Ytong, or 3D-printed nests. Keep at 18-24°C with humidity levels around 50-80%. Feed a steady diet of sugars and protein insects.
Where the difficulty is
Requires a mandatory cold diapause (hibernation) period during winter for optimal long-term colony health, and colonies grow rapidly into the tens of thousands.
Fun fact
Every summer, thousands of colonies participate in "Flying Ant Day," where virgin queens and males take flight simultaneously to mate in the air.
