Appearance
Workers measure 3-4.5 mm and queens 8-10 mm. They feature the characteristic heart-shaped gaster of the genus and a rough, leathery body texture as suggested by the species name coriaria.
Where it lives
Widespread in Southeast Asia, typically nesting in trees, dry logs, or hollow twigs within tropical rainforests.
Behaviour
Highly agile and arboreal. When disturbed, workers raise their gasters high in the air as a warning display. Large colonies show high aggression when foraging.
Keeping it
Easy to keep at 24-28°C and 50-70% humidity. They thrive in wood, acrylic, or 3D-printed nests, feeding enthusiastically on sugar water and feeder insects.
Where the difficulty is
Colonies grow rapidly and workers are small and fast, requiring reliable escape barriers as the population expands.
Fun fact
The species name "coriaria" derives from Latin, meaning "leathery," describing the distinctive textured surface of their exoskeleton.
