Appearance

Meranoplus laeviventris is a small ant, with workers measuring 2.5-3.5 mm. It features a heavily expanded thoracic shield (promesonotal shield) and a relatively smooth, shiny gaster compared to other hairy shield ants.

Where it lives

Distributed across Southeast Asia, including Thailand. They nest in leaf litter and topsoil under the shade of tropical rainforests and mixed deciduous forests.

Behaviour

They are exceptionally slow-moving and peaceful. Workers forage along the ground in neat trails and exhibit granivorous tendencies, collecting small seeds alongside insects and sweet liquids.

Keeping it

Best kept in high-humidity nests (60-80%) such as Ytong (autoclaved aerated concrete) or soil setups. Feed with sugar water, small soft-bodied insects, and occasional tiny seeds.

Where the difficulty is

Colony growth is remarkably slow in the founding stage. Due to their tiny size, setups must be escape-proof, and feeders must be sized appropriately.

Fun fact

The species name "laeviventris" derives from Latin, meaning "smooth belly," referring to its uniquely smooth and shiny gaster.
